The Abby Travis Foundation Review

Sounding like the soundtrack to a Broadway musical about a young starlet trying to make her way in the world, the Abby Travis Foundation's self-titled debut record is rousing, dramatic stuff. Travis, who resembles a raven-haired version of Jodie Foster and has a similar knockout throaty voice, has assembled a terrific band, with Gere Fenelllie's piano particularly standing out in Travis' lush compositions. There's a darkly lit nightclub vibe to a lot of these songs, and Travis writes some swell romantic lyrics, such as "I'd do somersaults to please you/but you're already gone/play in my mind a thousand times/each incidental glance that made me sigh." She's also a fine bassist who's played with Elastica, Beck, and KMFDM, as well as past projects of her own like the Rails and Mommy. This record marks the beginning of a very promising solo career.
